US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites: PM Modi expresses deep concern, speaks to Iran president

NEW DELHI: In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran early on June 22, 2025, the United States conducted airstrikes targeting three key Iranian nuclear facilities — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Following the strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered an address to the nation, accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the White House in Washington, D.C. He described the strikes as a "spectacular military success" aimed at disrupting Iran's nuclear enrichment capabilities, claiming the sites were "completely and totally obliterated."

Trump also posted on X: “We have completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iranian airspace. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American warriors,” Trump further stated. “NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

According to several reports, the operation involved B-2 bombers deploying bunker-buster bombs and 30 Tomahawk missiles launched from U.S. submarines. Israel, which had initiated strikes against Iran on June 13, praised the U.S. action, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it a "historic moment" to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of international law and the UN Charter, asserting its right to self-defense and vowing to continue its nuclear program despite the attacks.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the escalation, speaking with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the same day. Modi urged for "immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy" to restore regional peace, security, and stability, reiterating India's stance against military solutions. He emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution in a post on X, stating, “We discussed in detail the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations.” India's Ministry of External Affairs had previously voiced concern about the Israel-Iran conflict, monitoring developments and advising Indian nationals in the region to exercise caution.

Global reactions has been varied so far, while Saudi Arabia and Oman condemned the strikes, the UK urged Iran to return to negotiations. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the U.S. action "outrageous" and warned of "everlasting consequences," as Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on Israel, injuring dozens. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported no increased off-site radiation levels, while Iranian officials claimed the damage was minimal — though satellite imagery indicated significant impact at Fordow.
