England wins 1st test by 227 runs, takes 1-0 series lead

CHENNAI: Playing an outstanding innings in the opening test match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, visiting team of England registered a impressive 227 run win and took a 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series. Reportedly this is India’s first Test defeat at Chennai since the 12 run loss to Pakistan in 1999.

In the first innings, England had posted a humongous score of 578 in the first innings and latter knocked India all out for 337. Playing his 100th test, skipper Joseph Edward Root or Joe Root had added an brilliant 218 off 377 balls which laid the platform for England's win. Dominic Sibley at 87 and Ben Stokes at 82 had also contributed to the winning streak.

After England's second innings score of 178 India was chasing 420 for victory, however despite Virat Kohli's 72 runs and and Shubman Gill's 50 the home team were bowled out for 192 on the fifth and final day of the test. Leftarm spinner Jack Leach and paceman Anderson produced a classic spell of reverse swing to take 4 and 3 wickets respectively. 

With the loss of this match, Kohli has lost four Test matches in a row as a captain and this has antagonized fans who took to twitter demanding his resignation as captain.

England's victory has propelled it to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings chart with 442 points, followed by New Zealand with 420 points, Australia at third and India now stands at fourth in the tally.
