India beats England by 317 runs to level series 1-1

CHENNAI: Host India won the second Test against England today at the Chepauk in Chennai with an impressive 317 run on the on the fourth day itself, and not only leveled the series 1-1 but also got back in contention to make the final of the ICC World Test Championship.

R Ashwin was the biggest highligth of the second innings with an impressive knock of 106 with fourteen boundaries at an incredible strike rate of 71.62.

He also claimed 3 wickets of top order batsman like Burns, Lawrence and Stokes in his 18 overs, giving out 53 runs with an economy of 2.94. In England's first innings he had figures of 5/43 in 23.1 overs, at an economy rate of just 1.80 dismissing batsmen like Dom Sibley, Dan Lawrence and Ben Stokes, Olly Stone and Stuart Broad.

With 8 wickets in the match Ashwin was also adjudged Man of the Match for his century as he goes past the likes of Gary Sobers, Mushtaq Mohammad, Jacques Kallis and Shakib-Al-Hasan for his individual third instance of scoring a century and taking 5 wickets in a Test match.

Besides Ashwin, debutant left-arm spinner Axar Patel also claimed 5 wickets to 60 runs, while off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 wickets to 53 runs in India's second innings.

Which England, who led the table after winning the opening Test, slipped to fourth spot with 67.0 percentage points, the victory in the second Test has lifted India to second position in ICC World Test Championship with 69.7 percentage points on the points table but they cannot afford to lose another match as they need to win 2-1 or 3-1 to qualify for the final of the maiden edition of the championship.

England can still qualify, but for that they must win both remaining matches of the series against India. New Zealand has already qualified for the final while Australia can qualify ahead of India and England if the on-going series is drawn or if England wins 2-1.

After two matches in Chennai, the series now moves to Ahmedabad in Gujarat, with the day-night third Test beginning on 24 February.
