GAZA CITY: Since Monday Israeli military unleashed new airstrikes on Gaza, killing several militants and civilians, and continued its bombardment of the beleaguered Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning, targeting several areas after rockets were fired from the enclave.
According to various agencies reports, health officials in Gaza said that since sundown on Monday, 28 Palestinians, including 10 children and a woman were killed in Gaza, most by airstrikes. According to the Israeli military at least 16 of the dead were militants.
The barrage of rockets and airstrikes was preceded by hours of clashes on Monday between Palestinians and Israeli security forces, including dramatic confrontations at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a sacred site to both Jews and Muslims.
The Israeli police fired stun grenades inside the Al-Aqsa mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam, and Palestinian demonstrators threw stones at police as violence escalated on Monday.
Hundreds of Palestinians and around 30 police were injured, according to reports. Hamas fired rockets towards Jerusalem before Israel launched airstrikes against what it said was militant targets in the Gaza Strip.
The current violence, like previous rounds, including the last intifada, or uprising, has been fueled by conflicting claims over Jerusalem, which is at the emotional core of the long conflict.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) today Tweeted from its official handle, "In the last 24 hours, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have launched continuous attacks on Israel from Gaza. The IDF is operating in response to these attacks by striking terror targets and operatives in Gaza. This is Operation Guardian of the Walls."
In another tweet, IDF said, "We just killed the commander of the Hamas anti-tank missile unit, Iyad Fathi Faik Sharir. He was in charge of carrying out anti-tank missile attacks on Israel. Our aircraft are currently striking additional terror targets in Gaza."
