Congress's Adhir Ranjan in a verbal duel with NDA members in PAC meet

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader and chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury squabbled with BJP and JD(U) members when he attempted to make a political comment criticising the government’s COVID-19 management and vaccination policy.

The PAC which was the first ‘in person’ meeting after a long period of lockdowns in various states got off to a politicised start when Chowdhury began by reading out several paragraphs on the COVID-19 situation and calling on the committee to discuss the issue.

NDA members however questioned his unilateral move and even before he could finish reading out his note the BJP and the JD(U) members especially Jagdambika Pal and Lallan Singh protested and began shouting at him saying this was not part of the agenda and resolution needs to be put before the committee to vote on.

They protested very strongly and said that Chowdhury should discuss the agenda for the day which was the CAG reports on GST.

NDA members criticised Chowdhury saying that the PAC was not the platform to make a political comment however Chowdhury countered by saying that he was only quoting facts that were already in the public domain.

Although there was no formal confirmation of the squabble in the meeting from any senior members, according to some media reports the episode was 'very ugly.'

Chowdhury found some support from Congress member present Shaktisinh Gohil and T R Baalu from DMK and Rahul Shewale who said the committee should hear what the chair had to say.

The BJP’s Bhupendra Yadav, Satyapal Singh and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the JD(U)’s Rajiv Ranjan Singh, DMK leader T.R. Baalu, the AIADMK’s Thambi Durai, Rahul Shewale from the Shiv Sena, Bhartruhari Mahtab of the BJD and Shakti Singh Gohil from the Congress were other members of the meeting.
