Dutee Chand, Annu Rani, MP Jabir among others qualify for Tokyo Olympics

NEW DELHI: Twelve individual athletes from India including Dutee Chand, Annu Rani and MP Jabir, should be on their way to Tokyo in all likelihood as they booked automatic quota for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by breaching the qualification mark.
Dutee, Rani and Jabir made it to the Games through rankings, while the men's 4x400m relay team qualified through top list. Dutee will compete in the 100m and 200m events, Annu Rani will take part in the women’s javelin throw while MP Jabir will give it a shot in the 400m hurdles.
Dutee who recently shattered the the national record in the women’s 100m event in the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Patiala, was 41st and 50th respectively in the list of 56 athletes to compete in both the 100m and 200m events, while Rani was at 18th out of 32 while Jabir was placed at 32nd out of 40.
Rani had bettered her own national record with a throw of 63.24m during the Federation Cup in March before a performance of 62.83m in the National Inter-State Championships this week.
Jabir ace athlete of the Indian Navy, qualified in 400m hurdles after he clocked 49.78s to win gold at the Inter-State Аthletiсs Сhаmрiоnshiрs in Раtiаlа. He has a personal best of 49.13 seconds. The 25-year-old Naval sailor hails from Malappuram, Kerala and is currently ranked 34th in the World Athletics’ Road to Olympics rankings where 40 athletes qualify.
Sreeshankar had made it to the Olympics with a national record jump of 8.26m during the Federation Cup in March while shot putter Toor booked a Games berth with another national record mark of 21.49m during the Indian Grand Prix 4.
Kaur made it to the Olympics during the Federation Cup in March with a performance of 65.06m and then bettered her own national record with a throw of 66.59m during the subsequent Indian Grand Prix 4 on 21 June.
Veteran Punia was the last to bag an automatic qualification spot for the Olympics with a throw of 63.72m on the final day of the National Inter-State Championships on Tuesday.
The other qualified athletes include Shivpal Singh in men's javelin throw, Avinash Sable (men's 3000m steeplechase), five race walkers (KT Irfan, Sandeep Kumar and Rahul Rohilla in men's 20km event and Bhawana Jat and Priyanka Goswami in women's 20km event and Tajinder Pal Singh Toor (men's shot put).
Nearly 1900 athletes from more than 190 countries will compete at the Tokyo Olympic Games when the athletics programme begins on 30 July.
