Mary Kom bows out after losing to Ingrit Valencia; says upset with the verdict

NEW DELHI: India's Magnificent Mary, the only Indian female boxer to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, 38 years old MC Mary Kom's pursuit of a second Olympic medal ended in the pre-quarterfinals of the Tokyo Games as she bowed out of Tokyo Olympics after losing to Colombia’s Ingrit Lorena Victoria Valencia in women's 51kg by 3:2 split decision.

When the referee had declared her Colombian opponent the winner in a 3-2 split verdict, Mary who was the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist was left shell-shocked as she was more than confident that she had won the match. The judges however thought otherwise and Mary later said she was very upset with the verdict.

Valencia started off to a flyer as she won the first round as four out of the five judges gave her a 10 while one had a 9 for her showing, however, Mary came back with a flurry of punches on Valencia to win the second round and maintained the lead. In the third round also, Mary gave her best, but in the end, according to the judges it was just not enough.

Mary had however thought that she had put in the best and was truly upset on the decision of the judges, however, even with tears in her eyes, she bowed down with a smile.

On Sunday, she had stormed into the round of 16 of the women's flyweight (48-51 kg) category after defeating Dominican Republic's Miguelina Garcia in the round of 32 with a 4-1 win.
