NEW DELHI: The Indian women's hockey team has created history at the Tokyo Olympics, by beating three times champion and world no 2 Australian women's team to enter the first-ever Olympic semi-final. This means that with the spot in the semifinals India is guaranteed a medal match in the game for the first time at the Olympics.

Right from the start, the Indian side kept up the pressure on the Aussies and although they had the first shot at the goal in just the second minute of the game, the hit from forward Amrosia Malone from inside the circle struck the post. 

The near-miss hit did serve as a warning to the Indian side which then played with caution with some excellent turnovers by drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur and Haryana girl Monika Malik. 

India goalkeeper Savita Punia was at her best to foil the Australian attack and with nine crucial saves she was literary the wall against the attacks and the panic showed on the opponent teams faces who fretted in frustration.

In the 22nd minute defender, Gurjit Kaur converted India's lone penalty corner to surprise the Australians and eventually to win the match for the historic win.

India will now face Argentina in the semi-finals two days later on 4 August. Argentina had defeated Germany 3-0 in the first quarterfinal earlier on Monday.
