Ravi Dhaiya bags silver says, 'This is ok, my target was gold'

NEW DELHI: Two-time Asian champion and a bronze medalist from 2019 World Wrestling Championships Ravi Kumar Dahiya won a silver medal after losing the men's freestyle 57 kg wrestling final to Zaur Uguev of the Russian Olympic Committee, taking India's overall medal tally to 5 in the Tokyo Olympics.

Dahiya joins the rank of five athletes in India’s sporting history to win a silver medal at the Olympics, however, he did not look very impressed by the second price and later said, "This is ok, by my target was gold and I wanted to give it all for it."

Dahiya looked very confident as he took on two times World champion Uguev in the gold medal bout and managed to thwart his opponents attempt to attack his legs, however, the Russian wrestler got his first point early in the game when he managed to push Dahiya out of the circle to take a lead of 2-0.

Dahiya gets back in a swift move with a superb takedown to gain two points and level the tally at 2-2 with a swift move, but, Uguev is quick to grab back the lead with a takedown to go up 4-2. All attempts by Dahiya to get hold of Uguev's leg turned futile as he manages to escape the move somehow.

In the last one minute, Dahiya earns two more points with the takedown to reduce the margin to 4-7 and continues his attack however Uguev's brilliant techniques do not allow and at the final bell Dahiya finishes on the losing side in the gold medal bout.

Dahiya had earlier entered the 57-kg final by pinning Nurislam Sanayev to win the semi-final bout in the final minute by fall, after trailing on points. Although Dahiya did not complain he endured a bite on his bicep from his opponent, Sanayev which was clearly seen in the live telecast.
