Amarinder to launch a new party, may seek to partner with BJP and Akali factions

NEW DELHI: About a month after he quit as Punjab's chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced on late Tuesday night that he will be floating a new political party soon and may ally with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Akali factions to fight the forthcoming assembly elections.

The development was twitted by Raveen Thukral, media advisor to Amarinder Singh on his behalf, "The battle for Punjab’s future is on. Will soon announce the launch of my own political party to serve the interests of Punjab & its people, including our farmers who’ve been fighting for their survival for over a year."

"I will not rest till I can secure the future of my people and my state. Punjab needs political stability and protection from internal & external threats. I promise my people I will do what it takes to ensure its peace and security, which is today at stake," Thukral added in the tweet.

The tweet also said that he may ally with the BJP if the farmers’ protest is resolved and will explore an alliance with like-minded parties such as breakaway Akali groups, particularly Dhindsa & Brahmpura factions.

Singh had resigned on September 18, amid turmoil in Punjab Congress which escalated after a prolonged spat of the CM with state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu. After submitting his resignation Amarinder had said that he felt 'humiliated' after state MLAs were summoned to Delhi for a second time by the party high command.

About 40 MLAs from Punjab are believed to have written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi against CM Amarinder complaining about a variety of issues, the main among them being nonperformance.

While it has not committed to any tie-up with the former CM, the BJP has welcomed the announcement, calling Amarinder Singh one of the 'the tallest leader of Punjab.' Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt), said however said that he was hopeful of a seat arrangement with BJP if the Farmers Protest is resolved in farmers’ interest, although he added that Captain Amarinder was yet to approach them.
