Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai gets married to Asser Malik

NEW DELHI: Malala Yousafzai who received the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17, announced that she has tied the knot with her partner Asser Malik during an Islamic ceremony in Birmingham, England. She tweeted that it was 'a precious day' in her life, "Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life," she wrote in her tweet on Tuesday, sharing that they had a "small nikkah ceremony with family".

Malik who originally hails from Lahore says in his public profile that he is currently serving as General Manager High Performance at the Pakistan Cricket Board. His profile on Linkedin further says that he, 'Brought the world's largest amateur cricket league (LMS) in Pakistan. Designed player development program for Multan Sultans.' According to local media reports in England, Malala and Malik have known each other for a few years now.

People from around the world including Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra joined in wishing the couple. Among the thousands who took to Twitter in congratulating the Nobel laureate included Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Pakistan PM Imran Khan's former wife Jemima Goldsmith and Apple's CEO, Tim Cook.

Malala is a global advocate for girls' rights and education, who was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in October 2012 for actively supporting girls right to education in Mingora, Swat Valley in northern Pakistan as she rode home on a bus after taking an exam. The news made international headlines and offers from around the world poured in for her treatment.

She was first airlifted to a military hospital in Peshawar where she was operated upon, however as her condition began to deteriorate and she was then taken to England where she was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. After being in a coma for a few months she eventually made full recovery. 

Malala studied in a Birmingham school first and then joined the University of Oxford from where she graduated with honours from with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in June last year.
