Opposition leaders say decision repeal farm laws good, but late

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that the government has decided to repeal the three contentious farm laws and the process will be taken up in the upcoming Parliament session.  

The announcement has evoked some sharp reactions from the opposition leaders led by the Congress Party, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena and others who have welcomed the decision however said that it was taken too late.

Congress leader and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi tweeted in Hindi which translated, "Over 600 farmers martyred, over 350 days of protests, and farmers were run over by the car of a Union minister’s son in Lakhimpur Kheri, but you Narendra Modi were not bothered."

Later talking to the media she said that PM Modi has made these announcements is sensing defeat in the upcoming assembly elections and has started realising the reality of the country that it has been built by farmers. 

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi which translates to, "Arrogance of the government had to bow to the Satyagraha (struggle) of the farmers. Jai Hind Jai Kisan." 

Reacting to Modi's announcement Samajwadi Party, chief Akhilesh Yadav said that it was Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ‘fake apology’ and it won't work in upcoming polls. "People will not forgive them (Central government) in the upcoming polls. This fake apology won't work," he said. 

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Tweeted, "My heartfelt congratulations to every single farmer who fought relentlessly and were not fazed by the cruelty with which @BJP4India treated you. This is YOUR VICTORY!," she also added, "My deepest condolences to everyone who lost their loved ones in this fight."

Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal while welcoming the Centre’s announcement to repeal the three contentious farm laws, he tweeted that the coming generations will never forget the sacrifice made by the farmers.

"All three (farm) laws repealed. More than 700 farmers have been martyred. Their martyrdom will be remembered forever. The coming generations will remember how the farmers of our country put their lives at stake to save farming and farmers. My greetings to the farmers of the country," he tweeted.

Shiv Sena leader and Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut while welcoming the decision, said that if the government would have taken the decision a bit earlier, many lives would have been saved.

"These laws have been withdrawn due to the fear of defeat in the elections of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. There was pressure on the government and in the end, the farmers have won," Raut said.
