Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar dies of multiple organ failure

MUMBAI: Legendary singer and Bharat Ratna awardee Lata Mangeshkar passed away today early morning at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for more than 28 days of hospitalisation for post-Covid-19 complications. She was 92 years old when she breathed her last. 

Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating the singer at Breach Candy Hospital made the announcement of her demise, "It is with profound grief that we announce the sad demise of Lata Mangeshkar at 8:12 am today. She has died because of multi-organ failure," he said.

The singer was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia and mild symptoms of coronavirus on January 22 and was in the incentive care for some time before showing marginal improvement.

After some intermittent recovery, her condition suddenly deteriorated on Saturday and her condition turned very critical, the doctors said that she was on aggressive treatment. Reportedly she was on ventilator support in the intensive care unit and as sepsis had set in it began to impact multiple organs eventually leading to multiple organ failure.

As the news of her deteriorating health was conveyed to the family members, a stream of visitors came to the hospital to see her. Including her sisters' singer Asha Bhosle, brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar, politicians including Raj Thackeray chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Supriya Sule of NCP, central minister and BJP leader Piyush Goyal, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and others arrived to inquire about her health. 

Soon after the news of her death broke, the entire country mourned the loss of the singers and several took to social media to condole her death. Right from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several ministers to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, film stars and businessmen including business tycoon Anand Mahindra twitted their condolences.

PM Modi shared a picture of the singer and wrote on Twitter, "I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people".

Sharing a picture of himself with the legendary singer, union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, “Her death is a personal loss for me", while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi twitted, "Received the sad news of Lata Mangeshkar ji’s demise. She remained the most beloved voice of India for many decades. Her golden voice is immortal and will continue to echo in the hearts of her fans. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."

The mortal body of the singer will be taken to her residence 'Prabhukunj' situated in South Mumbai and the funeral is to be held at the Shivaji Park grounds. Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Mumbai to pay last respects to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar later in the day today.
