Asha Bhosle turns 90 on September 8, will perform in Dubai

MUMBAI: Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who is popular for singing in Hindi, Marathi and several regional cinemas, will turn 90 birthday on 8th September, and to celebrate the occasion she will be singing in a concert 'Asha@90 Live' at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.

The grand ASHA@90: Live in Concert, was announced by her youngest son Anand Bhosle and PME Entertainment on August 8 and this much-anticipated event marks her return to Dubai's stage after a decade and promises to be an unparalleled celebration of music in UAE.

Renowned figures including Jackie Shroff, Naved Saidi, Nitin Shankar, Salim-Sulaiman, Poonam Dhillon, and Padmini Kolhapure joined a press conference to extend their admiration and support for Asha Bhosle. 

Asha who is the younger sister of the late legendary Lata Mangeshkar who breathed her last on February 6, 2022, is one of the most influential singers of India having sung over 12,000 songs in various languages in a career spanning over eight decades. 

She has won dozens of awards including two National Film Awards, 18 Maharashtra State Film Awards, two Grammy nominations and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000). She was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan (2008) by the Indian government and most recently the Maharashtra Bhushan (2021) by the Maharashtra state.

Asha comes from the illustrious musical Mangeshkar family, their father Deenanath Mangeshkar was a well-known Marathi theatre actor and classical vocalist and besides Lata Mangeshkar, she has two other well-known singers Meena Khadikar and Usha Mangeshkar as well as a brother, music composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

She sang her first film song 'Chala Chala Nav Bala' in 1943 for the Marathi film Majha Bal working with music composer Datta Davjekar, and a year later she sang her first song for a Hindi film Hansraj Behl's Chunariya in 1948 followed by a Hindi solo in 1949 for the film Raat Ki Raani. 

Although she started her film career with low-budget films, she eventually moved on to sing some of the greatest hits of Hindi films working with some of the most legendary composers since the 1950s from different generations including O.P. Nayyar, Khayyam, Ravi, Shankar-Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman and his son Rahul Dev Burman, A.R. Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, Anu Malik among several others.

Some of the most memorable songs of yester years include songs like, 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja' picturised on Helen in the film Caravan, 'O Haseena Zulfonwali' and 'O Mere Sona Re' from the film Teesri Manzil all duets with Mohamad Rafi and the legendary song 'Dum Maro Dum' for 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' which is a everygreen song. 

Although Asha married early at the age of 16 after she eloped with 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle's secretary and had three children, the two separated in 1960. In 1980 she married legendary music director Rahul Dev Burman who passed away in 1994.
