MUMBAI: Opposition leader in the Maharashtra Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar has accused the ruling Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) of delaying the arrest of Mihir Shah son of Sena party functionary Rajesh Shah associated with the Palghar unit. Mihir Shah (24) is the main suspect in a recent hit-and-run incident in which a woman Kaveri Nakhva was killed and her husband Pradeep Nakhva, residents of Worli's Koliwada area, the fish-seller couple was injured.
Shah who is alleged to have been drunk had rammed his BMW car on their two-wheeler from behind and although Pradeep was thrown down on the road, Kaveri riding a pillion landed on the bonnet of the due to the impact of the crash, was dragged for over 2 kms. After giving the wheels of the car to his driver he absconded and managed to evade the police since Sunday morning, was arrested from Virar near Mumbai. Rajesh Shah and BMW driver Rajrishi Bidawat were earlier arrested, but the former later got bail.
Wadettiwar claimed this delay was to let alcohol clear from Shah's system before testing and asked if alcohol could be detected in the blood report after three days and alleged that the state government and the police tried to hush up the issue of a fatal crash and demanded a high-level probe into the matter.
"The government and the police have tried to hush up the issue. He (Mihir Shah) was not intentionally arrested as he was drunk and it would have come into a blood sample. I'll say that the police had hidden him. When they tested him twice and alcohol wasn't found in the blood sample, then he was only produced before the police. I demand a high-level inquiry into this matter," said Wadettiwar, who is also the Leader of Opposition of the state Assembly.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and MP Sanjay Raut have also alleged that efforts to save the accused in the Worli hit-and-run case had started from day one. Sanjay Raut spoke to media persons after the arrest of the main accused Mihir Shah. Raut also demanded that the police check the criminal record of the accused Rajesh Shah. He also claimed that Rajesh Shah was also related to the underworld gang and also questioned how he became a special man for the chief minister.
