JAMMU: In a significant display of democratic participation, the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) assembly elections witnessed a robust voter turnout of 61.13% across 24 constituencies in seven districts. This marks a notable moment, reflecting a growing interest in the democratic process in the region, with the overall figures showing the highest turnout compared to the past three Lok Sabha and two state polls.

Among the districts, Kishtwar stood out with an impressive voter turnout of 80%, showcasing the enthusiasm of the local population to participate in the electoral process - the highest in this phase. Other districts also saw substantial participation, with Ramban at 70.55% and Doda at 71.34%. In the Kashmir region, Kulgam led with 62.60%, followed by Anantnag at 57.84% and Shopian at 55.96%.

The Election Commission of India reported that the turnout figures may still rise as data from some polling stations is being compiled, excluding postal ballots. Initial reports indicated a turnout of around 58.19% by 5 PM, but as the day progressed, the final tally reached the current figure of over 61%.

The Election Commission highlighted the long queues at polling stations as a testament to the people’s trust in the democratic exercise. J&K's Chief Electoral Officer PK Pole said that the people's participation in the polls was very impressive, considering that the South Kashmir regions are known for low turnout.

The election in the state of J&K is particularly significant as it is the first assembly election in the region since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The successful conduct of the elections so far, without major incidents of violence, has been a positive sign for the democratic process in the region.

The polls for the second phase in J&K's 26 seats will be held on September 15, and the remaining 40 seats will go for voting on October 1, with counting set for October 8.
