Exit polls give Congress edge in Haryana, NC-Cong in Jammu & Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Numerous exit polls on Saturday indicated a decisive majority for the Congress party in Haryana and suggested an advantage for its alliance with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, with the regional partner projected to be the largest party. According to the C-Voter-India Today polls, Congress is forecasted to secure between 50 and 58 seats, while the BJP is expected to win 20 to 28 seats in Haryana. The Republic Bharat-Matrize polls estimate an even greater tally for Congress, predicting 55 to 62 seats compared to the BJP’s 18 to 24. Dainik Bhaskar estimated Congress would obtain 44 to 54 seats and the BJP 15 to 29 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly.

The Peoples' Pulse exit poll suggested Congress would win 49 to 60 seats, with the BJP securing 20 to 32 seats in Haryana. Most exit polls indicated that the INLD would perform better than the JJP, with some projections showing it could win up to 10 seats. In Jammu and Kashmir, the C-Voter-India Today survey placed the National Conference-Congress alliance at 40 to 48 seats, while the BJP was projected to win between 27 and 32 seats in the Union Territory's 90-member assembly.

Elections in Jammu and Kashmir took place after a 10-year hiatus, following the state's division into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh - in 2019. Dainik Bhaskar estimated the National Conference-Congress alliance would secure 35 to 40 seats, with the BJP winning 20 to 25 seats, while the Axis My India polls projected the NC-Congress alliance would achieve between 35 and 45 seats, the BJP between 24 and 34 seats, and others between 4 and 10 seats.

The BJP has held power in Haryana since 2014, with Manohar Lal Khattar serving as chief minister for over nine years. The BJP’s second term, which began in 2019, was in coalition with the JJP, led by Dushyant Singh Chautala as deputy chief minister. Khattar and Chautala resigned in March ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, paving the way for Nayab Singh Saini, a prominent OBC leader of the BJP, to become chief minister. The JJP also ended its alliance with the BJP.
