NEW DELHI: The state of Afghanistan has fallen and with the unarmed capture of Kabul and President Ashraf Ghani fleeing the country the Taliban which refers to itself as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), has formally taken over the capital and the country as a whole.

The bloodless siege was almost over on Monday when the Afghan national police circling the capital Kabul abandoned their posts and fled leaving the citizens of the city to be subject to arson and plundering.

Although the Taliban had earlier said that it would not take over Kabul without a proper transfer of power, since they now had a free run, members of the IEA went around the city to arrest those who were indulging in looting.

Later in the evening, Zabihullah Mujahid the Spokesman of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, tweeted and said that the IEA has ordered its forces to enter the areas of Kabul city from which the enemy has left because there is a risk of theft and robbery. He also added that the Taliban had been ordered not to harm civilians and not to enter individual homes and act with caution.

The last two nights have been extremely traumatic for those who are trapped in their houses fear of being broken into and with sporadic firing witnessed in several areas.

The city along with the whole country has descended into chaos and thousands of Afghani along with foreign nationals thronged the national airport in a frantic bid to escape from the Taliban even as all civilian and even military flights have been cancelled. Crowds full of men, women and children were seen rusing out on the streets to reach the airport in abid to escape.

Heartwrenching television footage over the past two days has shown how Afghani citizens in thousands were trying to get into a U.S military aeroplane which had come on a rescue operation for its citizens, security and diplomatic personnel. U.S security forces had a hard time trying to push people back even having to fire shots as people clung to the aircraft which was taxing on the runway. Later, pictures of some of the Afghans falling down of the plane during take off shook all those who saw the footage.

The absolute seize of Kabul could take place as Afghani President Ashraf Ghani left the presidential palace on Sunday and fled Afghanistan with his wife Rula Ghani and two close aides, and if news reports from several media are to be believed he took with him, bags full of cash.

According to a report in Russian media RIA News Agency, Russia's embassy in Kabul said on Monday that Ghani had fled the country with four cars and a helicopter full of cash and had to leave some money behind as it would not all fit in.

Ghani's whereabouts are still unknown and local media are speculating that he might be heading toward any of the neighbouring countries like Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan, however, the reports added that it was left for these countries to decide if they want to give him asylum or to turn him down which was more likely given the current geopolitical siutation the region.

As Ghani left the place, the Taliban captured the presidential palace late on Monday and the premisis is now under their control.
